COACH EDUCATION AND EVENTS

Coach Education and Events

The Idaho Interscholastic Cycling League facilitates annual NICA coach education and training events that fulfill NICA Coach licensing requirements.

NICA Leader Summit (Leadership Essentials)

Who

The 1-day Leader Summit is for head coaches or team directors starting a team or taking over a team. It is also appropriate for coaches seeking to advance their NICA license level or obtain CEUs to maintain their current license.

  • Not required for Level 1 coaches
  • Not required for level 2 coaches, but optional attendance can be used as 8 CEUs toward licensing requirements
  • Required for coaches first obtaining a Level 3 license; optional attendance can be used as 8 CEUs toward maintaining current license

What

The IICL annual Leader Summit brings together coaches, assistant coaches, ride leaders, parent volunteers, team directors and anyone interested in learning more about our coaching and teaching methods to develop skills and knowledge, share strategies and build community. This conference will promote a well-rounded approach to coaching that creates an environment in which high school and middle school students can grow and thrive. This is a great opportunity to spend a day in the company of peers and energize for the upcoming season.

This 1-day event is required for a first-time Level 3 coach and will also fulfill the continuing education requirements for NICA Coach Licensing Levels 2-3. Additional requirements for NICA Coach Licensing Levels 2-3 can be found on NICA’s Coach Licensing Program page.

Coaches can combine this Leader Summit with the NICA On-The-Bike Skills Training (see below) on Sunday, or can link this with another Saturday NICA On-The-Bike Skills Training,  providing the opportunity for coaches to obtain all required NICA training (excluding WFA) for a Level 2 or above license without the need to attend a Sunday course.

Registration fees include breakfast and lunch and all seminars/training.

There will be an optional group ride after the completion of all classroom sessions.

Wilderness First Aid (WFA) 16-Hour

Who

  • Level 2 and 3 NICA Coach (NEW REQUIREMENT IN 2019 – BOTH LEVEL 2 AND 3 COACHES ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE WFA OR EQUIVALENT FIRST AID TRAINING)

What

The Idaho League is excited to announce our continued partnership with Simple Backcountry Medicine for our Wilderness First Aid (WFA) offering.   This 16 hour class will fulfill NICA Coach Licensing Level 3 requirements. Open to the public and Level 1-3 NICA Coaches. Please note, NICA will not be accepting any 8-hour WFA or Advanced First Aid certificates for coaches within the Idaho League.

The Wilderness First Aid Course will meet all requirements outlined by the Wilderness Medical Society for the WFA certification, which will include Patient Assessment and Movement, as well as Managing Major Trauma, Wounds, and Musculoskeletal Injuries.  We will also devote time to Common Medical and Environmental Problems, particularly those relevant to Cycling Coaches and Leaders.

While we’ll cover the full spectrum of required topics, there will be an emphasis on simple strategies for handling common problems.  There will be time for questions and discussion in the highly interactive learning environment.  Significant time will also be devoted to hands-on practice, scenarios, and case studies to help ingrain knowledge gained during lecture.

The IICL-sponsored course will be taught by Bill McKnight, a Board Certified Physician Assistant and Fellow of the Wilderness Medical Society.  Bill has 15 years of clinical experience in emergency and family medicine.  He taught Outdoor Emergency Care for the National Ski Patrol as well as WFA and WFR courses for an international medical support and education company before focusing on his own company, Simple Backcountry Medicine, for the last several years.

The IICL sponsors and subsidizes four WFA training courses for NICA coaches across the state at a cost of $165/participant.
