IICL CONCUSSION PROTOCOL

Concussion Protocol Information

The Idaho Interscholastic Cycling League (IICL) is proud to partner with St. Luke’s Sports Medicine to offer access for students, parents, coaches and community members a protocol and resources to keep everyone educated and safe when it comes to concussions in youth sports. Based on data from the NICA Safety Study, the prevention of concussions, treatment of concussions and conservative athlete return to play after concussions are of the utmost importance to the whole NICA Community. For this reason we ask all coaches, parents and student-athletes to follow these 3 easy steps to comply with Idaho State Law, to keep yourself educated on the importance of concussion identification and to manage a conservative return to school/play as outlined in the IICL Concussion Protocol.

Step 1 – All parents and student-athletes are required by Idaho law to receive concussion education prior to participation in any NICA sanctioned event or team practice.

  • This can be done in person at one of your team meetings and you should check with your team director to see if they have this option available for you.
  • You can also watch the St. Luke’s/IICL Concussion Protocol training video

(The video is 10:22 minutes long and you won’t be able to pause, rewind or fast-forward once you start)

IT’S IMPORTANT TO WATCH THE ENTIRE VIDEO.  PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT INFORMATION IS ON THE LAST SLIDE AS THAT WILL BE PART OF THE VERIFICATION INFORMATION YOU WILL NEED TO SUBMIT IN STEP 2 BELOW.

Step 2 – Complete the Parent Acknowledgement Form.

  • If you receive the training in person at a team meeting, coaches will have a paper copy of the form for you to complete.
  • If you watch the training video above you can complete the online form HERE.

Step 3 – Take concussion serious. You have a responsibility to keep yourself and/or your child safe.  If you have any questions or suspect concussion, please use the following resources to help guide you through the identification, management and the conservative return to school/play protocols.

Step 1 – All NICA coaches are required to complete the CDC/NFHS Concussion training as part of their online Pit Zone registration and must be at least Level 1 licensed prior to assisting with any NICA sanctioned event or team practice.

  • Verify that you and all coaches on your team have completed Pit Zone registration and at least Level 1 licensing.

Step 2 – Coaches need to verify that all parents and student-athletes have received IICL Concussion Protocol Education. Options for obtaining this education are described above.

  • If held in person, coaches must collect signed Parent and Student Education Idaho League Acknowledgement Forms. Please maintain these forms in your possession for 7 years.
  • Access to the online acknowledgement form response sheet will be provided to Team Directors in order to verify compliance on your teams. For access to this report, email League Director Eddie Freyer: eddie@idahomtb.org
